My painting project continues this week. I was correct that being a part of this blog forced me to make some progress on my side project, even if it was only a little. I think I’ve finished all of the base layers and can now move on to the details. So far I’ve been using the palette knife mainly, but I might start using a brush.
I’m also glad that this blog is a place for us to discuss our mistakes. In efforts to be brave, I’ll even highlight mine here. After taking a second look, I realized the domed building on the right was the same size or larger than the Capitol building on the left. Nothing in the painting is exactly proportional, but the Capitol is a main feature here, so having it shrink in the background doesn’t make sense (or maybe it does depending on your political views). Regardless, I’ll need to cover up the mistake in the sky somehow.

This is coming along nicely Sarah. I am excited to see what kind of detailing you have in mind. I don’t think you need to worry about the domed building, though. It may be as big as the Capitol, but it’s coloring is significantly less dominant and since the Capitol is centrally located it holds more weight that way as well.
If anything, it might be interesting to see if you can make the domed building even bigger, therefore adding more depth and variation to the piece, but keep it feeling secondary. The amount of detail you give to them will play a part in this relationship as well.
It’s looking really good. I like the colors you’ve picked. I’m very interested in seeing how this one comes along having started my own palette knife painting adventure recently. We’ll have to swap notes!
