Hello again everyone! I’m back from the dead, in case you didn’t notice. The last few weeks have been really intense. Something of a perfect storm between getting slammed at work, freelance ramping up, and health issues (first time in the E.R.). Nevertheless I’ve made it through and even have a little something I can share today.
Keenan Cummings, an incredibly talented designer/illustrator/entrepreneur, whom most of you know, is working on a really cool project called Wander. As a promotion for the site (onwander.com) he has asked about 20 illustrators to design postcards based on famous quotes that have to do with travel in some fashion (blog.onwander.com).
I chose the quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson “…Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail…” Obviously my take on this was to relate it to the story of Hansel & Gretel. I wanted my interpretation of the gingerbread house to be a little more subtle than to affix all manners of candy to it, even with the the shingles I chose colors that didn’t scream Necco wafers. I guess you could say that I approached it as if there was actually a tudor cottage that could be described as a gingerbread house without actually being made of gingerbread and candy.
I’ve already sent the files to Keenan so I don’t know if I’ll have time to fix any of the glaring problems that you’ve begun listing in your head but please let me know anyway.
The final touch will be the “stamp” that will be added to it.
ADDENDUM

Simply Beautiful. I love it.
One slight gripe is that something doesn’t seem right with the smoke circles. I wish I could articulate what that was.
I love the colors of the tiles of the roof.
Agreed, I adjusted the smoke. Now more smokey.
I really am liking it. I have enjoyed the others on the wander poster list, I’ve been taking a look at them as they pile up. Nice quote as well. Gavin – I see what you’re saying…I think that the smoke is just competing… maybe make it a little less prominent, fading out or in shadow, it’s like too light and too flat.
Great illustration! The new smokier smoke looks great.
it’s true!
