So I found this great website a while ago and jumped at the chance to do a piece for it. It’s called Postcards to Alphaville and it’s all about characters from great films. Basically you watch a film and then make an illustration based on a character from the film. I watched Distant Voices/Still Lives by Terence Davies, and though I can’t say it was my cup of tea, it was still a spectacularly made film. Eileen is a resilient character who, like so many around her in post-war England, confronted life’s hardships with music and song.
The funny thing is that it probably took almost as long to get the type in a place where I felt comfortable with it as it did to paint the blasted thing. Still trying to figure out how to marry my illustrations with type, but I’ll get there one day.

Houston, we all struggle with type/image combinations from time to time. I think what you chose is really elegant and a nice solution. I don’t know if the slash / is necessary, but that’s my opinion.
Houston, this is awesome! I think your painting looks great, as always, and I really liked that you created the type by hand. It compliments the image nicely but remains as a secondary element to the portrait, which is perfect for the piece. Good job, I like it.
