I mentioned a while ago that I was going to order this book, in hopes it would actually teach me how to design type. (Instead of only talking about personality of type like so many other disappointing purchases I have made.) I opened it and my jaw dropped. FINALLY, a comprehensive book that actually shows the anatomy of letter forms and their spacial relationships. It covers serif and san serif fonts. It is complete with illustrated directions. I haven’t gotten very far into it, as it is quite meaty…a college course in and of itself…but so far I would recommend it if you’re serious. Bring it on Karen Cheng!
(I Wish I could post images of the inside, but it is expressly forbidden under the copyrights. Sorry.)
I kind of want to just start sneaking into her lectures. I’ll have to check that book out from the library (multiple times).
And then you can sneakily post your notes from her lectures here. Shhhh.
By the way, I tried to go to a guest lecture in UW’s graphic design department. It filled up right before I got to the door. The most frustrating part was listening to the 20-yr-old students complaining that they were required to be there for class credit. I wanted to shake them and let them know how lucky they are.
Dude, get their names and addresses next time…I’ll go shake them. Fill the well people, fill the well! (That one is for you Adrian Pulfer.) And you my friend Brad, how lucky are you that you have the option to attend those things!
Thanks for sharing Anna. I think I know what I want for my next birthday.
