After 5 years in Brooklyn, it occurred to me that I was way over due to get myself a hipster single-speed bike. Unfortunately, if I stored it outside it would probably get stolen in the first week. And, NYC is not really known for it’s storage space. The only option is to stash it high up on an available wall.
I looked all around for a good wall mount rack, but it seemed that they either looked ugly and cheap or cost a whole lot more than I wanted to spend. So I looked under my bed at all the random wood scraps I collect and searched through the Ikea catalog. I think the finished product turned out nicely. It looks clean and simple and only cost me $4.

Whenever I do this type of thing I always think it would have been smart to have taken more pictures and documented the process via an Instructable or something. But while I am working I always forget or just don’t want to bother. Oh well.

Nice! Now you just need toe clips.
This is a really cool rack. You could make more of these and put all sorts of stuff on the wall. Really great solution using pieces that weren’t meant for this type of usage.
What Ikea parts did you use for this? I would like to build something similar, it looks great. Thanks!
Thanks Darren. I used the Ekby Lerberg Bracket (http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/30168724/). It works well because when turned vertically it is pretty tall, allowing it to place the bike weight up and down, parallel to the wall, rather than pulling away from it. The rest of it is made from a 2″x2″ board (1.5″ in real life), some dowels and random bolts, screws and what nots.
To cut out the dips that hold the bike frame and clamped the two sides together with a 3/4″ board in between. Then I drilled down the middle of the 3/4″ with a 2″ hole saw. This way the dip is ver accommodating for any size frame, but isn’t too deep. I hope that makes sense. If I had written plans for this I would totally give them to you, but I basically just made it up as I went along.
Good luck.
Thanks!
