Valentine’s Luau

proof

I was asked to make a poster for a church dance last week. I was excited to illustrate a Tiki Lounge scene in the style of Josh Agle, but for a tiny 11x17 poster, I realized that it needed to be pretty minimal and bold. I really like the way the heart breaks up the ...

Der Kinderstrauss

Kinderstrauss

Every few months, when a new game or product is released at work, my coworker Andrew visits each desk to drop off free goodies. Over the past few years, this tradition has evolved into an elaborate folk tale. The mythical "Kinderstrauss" enters the office early in the morning to deliver his games and toys. ...

Caslon

I'm working on two things this week: 1) learning letterforms, and 2) improving hand control. I'm starting with a classic humanist typeface: Caslon. I found a specimen book from 1734 and started copying a few letters at 144pt on some sketch paper. For the first two letters I used a straight edge, protractor, and circle template. ...

S.O.S.

I would really love to design a typeface someday. I'd even be ok designing a really ugly typeface, but at this point I can't even draw a single letter without cheating and looking at an existing font. When I look at classic typefaces, I have so many questions that I get overwhelmed. Let's take stem ...

Safari Disco Club

A few years ago my wife and I started a tradition of making videos for each other on our birthdays. The kids love it, and they are so fun to direct. They come up with really funny ideas if you give them the opportunity. Here's what we've been working on this week. http://vimeo.com/47665241

Color Mixing (kind of)

I just finished a great 3-week primer in color theory, taught by my drawing teacher. It was taught from a painter's perspective, but we covered a lot of principals that are useful for designers too. One of the assignments he gave us was to take an art print and recreate it from swatches cut out ...

Titling and Portraits

Last week we started a kickstarter campaign to raise money for the movie we're shooting in September. I really hate begging for money, so that has been really uncomfortable. But we're getting a pretty good response so far, and hopefully we'll continue to gain momentum. Here's the cardboard lettering I did for the title. I also ...

Shooting with a DSLR

[vimeo 45020164] I wanted a little break from my Shakespeare project, so this week I'll share a video from a little family get-together in Spokane.  I'm borrowing my dad's Nikon D7000, to decide if I want to buy it now that his D800 arrived. We've got lot's of great Nikon lenses in the family, so I ...

Honeycomb Cardboard Sculpting

Tonight I played around with some honeycomb cardboard to make a graphic for the film I'm working on. I didn't have very high expectations, but I was pleasantly surprised with the result (even though I made the Bard a bit too skinny).
